So very often a physician becomes so engrossed and enamored by the position and trust placed in him by patients that he forgets he is only an individual with special training who is no better or no worse than those he treats. The wise physician will learn from his patients and let the good rub off. He will ignore the gross and ignoble, but never place himself above or outside the circle of those he treats.    — Garth B. Last, MD

Garth Last loved people.  He demonstrated that love through a life of service.  The stories in this book demonstrate his special feelings for his patients and for his community.  Dr. Last had special affection for the less fortunate.  On some occasions he accepted eggs, fresh fruit, meat and well-intended IOU’s in exchange for medical services because he knew some of his patients simply could not pay.  In one instance he even gave his family car to man who was without transportation to get to work.  For nearly 20 years Dr. Last was the only physician in the 90-mile stretch of sparsely populated desert between St. George, Utah and Kanab, Utah—he was on call every night and every day because the people of the area needed him and there was no one else to whom they could turn.

In addition to his commitment to the medical profession, Dr. Last served as a City Councilman, a member of the local Board of Education and later as a County Commissioner.  He also served in a number of leadership positions in his church.  Most importantly, Dr. Last was a committed husband and a loving father.  He often said that his greatest joy was derived from his family.

Dr. Last passed away as a result of cancer shortly after his 64th birthday.  A Foundation, which was established in his name, continues his tradition of caring for others.  The Foundation helps to cover health care and related costs for individuals who have exhausted personal and family resources and do not qualify for government assistance.

The Garth B. Last Charitable Foundation is closely associated with Southern Utah Home Care & Hospice, Southern Nevada Home Health Care, Virgin Valley Home Care & Hospice and Granite Mountain Home Care & Hospice.  Dr. Last was the co-founder of these companies but he did not live to see them mature.  The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) corporation that receives tax-deductible contributions from thoughtful donors.  Donations to the Foundation can be made by clicking the "Donate" button above and questions about the Foundation can be directed to:
