Volunteers - The Heart of Hospice

As a Hospice Volunteer, you can touch the lives of others by providing comfort, care and hope to patients and their families. Serving as a volunteer will enrich your life as well. Volunteers are the heart of hospice.

"Being a Hospice Volunteer makes me feel good about myself, and to appreciate my own life that much more."

BEING A HOSPICE VOLUNTEER IS NOT ONLY A GIFT THAT YOU GIVE, BUT ALSO A GIFT YOU RECEIVE - BY YOUR GIFT OF SERVICE, YOU ARE ALLOWED TO SHARE IN ONE OF THE MOST MEANINGFUL AND PERSONAL EXPERIENCES OF THIS LIFE WITH ANOTHER HUMAN BEING.

Many times the most important thing a Hospice Volunteer does is simply to be a friendly presence - a listening ear. Volunteers can bring a sense of calm and security into the lives of those going through a very difficult, yet profound experience.

It takes a unique person to be a Hospice Volunteer. Do you recognize qualities within yourself that would allow you to serve another in this very special way? Do you see within yourself the ability to be a "light in the storm" to assist those in need?

How You Can Help:

Volunteers represent all ages and life experiences. They are drawn to hospice work for a variety of reasons, but the characteristics that define and unite them are compassion and the desire to help. Many of our volunteers work directly with patients and families, providing companionship and emotional support, while others make gifts for the patients, share special talents, provide office assistance, or participate in community programs and special events. Volunteers often give bereavement support to loved ones after the patient has died. There are so many ways you can make a difference in the life of another. Whatever your contribution, you'll feel great knowing you have given comfort during a most difficult time.

You may hesitate to volunteer for fear you will be asked to give more time than you have available, or because you are uncertain of what will be required of you. Please be assured that whatever time you have to give will be appreciated. We also make certain that through the training process you will be comfortable with all aspects of Hospice, death and dying before offering you an assignment.

To be a volunteer you must be at least 18 years of age and have a desire to serve.

MANY TIMES THE MOST IMPORTANT THING A HOSPICE VOLUNTEER DOES IS SIMPLY TO BE A FRIENDLY PRESENCE, A LISTENING EAR. VOLUNTEERS CAN BRING A SENSE OF CALM AND SECURITY INTO THE LIVES OF THOSE GOING THROUGH A VERY DIFFICULT, YET PROFOUND EXPERIENCE.
